CNM Science & Engineering Research Challenge Mission and History

If you wish to participate in the Central NM Science & Engineering Research Challenge, ask your science teacher about obtaining the necessary protocols and an official entry forms. If your school does not hold a sanctioned science fair, contact the Central NM Science & Engineering Research Challenge office for information on how you can compete in the fair. There is a $15.00 fee for each student competing. If students enter a team project the cost is $30.00 for two students or $45.00 for three students. No more than three students per project is allowed. Students must reside within the Central NM Region to compete.

That area includes:

Albuquerque public, private, and parochial schools as well as the surrounding areas of Algodones, Belen, Bernalillo, Edgewood, Estancia, Jemez, Los Lunas, Moriarty, Mountainair, Placitas, and Rio Rancho.

The Central NM Science & Engineering Research Challenge takes place yearly in mid-March. Competition at the Central NM Science & Engineering Research Challenge is divided into two age groups: Junior (grades 6-8) and Senior (grades 9-12). Projects are further divided into categories.

Projects are displayed and judged according to topic. Judging is conducted in two sessions. In the first session, judging is conducted by professionals in fields related to your project. These judges determine your placing in your category and in the fair as a whole. In the following session, special judges representing businesses, organizations, and individuals may choose to talk with you about your project. These judges (or groups of judges) give out a wide variety of special awards based upon their individual criteria.

"Science Fair" Levels of Competition

Intel ISEF-affiliated "science fairs" are organized into different levels of competition. They are: school, regional, state, and international levels. Most competitors exhibit first at their school's science fair. If a competitor's project places sufficiently well at the school fair, he/she can move up to the regional level of competition. From the regional level, he/she has the chance to qualify for the state and/or international fairs. From the state level, he/she may qualify for the international science and engineering fair.
