Dear Students:
My name is Krystal Wood, and I just graduated from the University of New Mexico in 2004 majoring in Elementary Education.
The science fair has played a large role in my life, both pedagogically and personally. I started competing in the science and engineering fair when I was in kindergarten, and continued to participate in it through my high school years. In high school, I earned the honor to attend and compete at the International Science & Engineering Fair.
Words cannot accurately describe how incredibly rewarding this experience was for me, but it is definitely one that will forever remain in my memories. Science fair has given me so much. Among other things, participating in the science fair helped build my character and raise my self-esteem, so that I could overcome shyness and perfect my public speaking skills.
Not only does science fair provide students with opportunities to travel to new, exciting places and meet scores of amazing young students from all over the world, but it also encourages the practical application of education. Science fair promotes enthusiasm for science, helps improve speaking and writing abilities, exposes students to new, fascinating innovations and ideas in the scientific world, and introduces practical application of the scientific method. Students involved in science fairs gain knowledge as well as college scholarships, world travel, employment, occupational goals, cash awards, and many other benefits. Whether students experience it at the local, regional, state, or even international level, each and every participant gains something more in his or her life.
The International Science and Engineering Fair is perhaps one of the most gratifying events one can ever participate in, and I would strongly encourage all young people to take part in it. I'm anxious to provide the experience of science fair to my future students and look forward to the opportunity to be a teacher!
Best of luck,
Krystal Wood
