2020 Research Challenge Has Been Cancelled

Students, teachers, and parents,

We are very sorry to report that the Central New Mexico STEM Research Challenge is CANCELLED due to the growing concern over the COVID-19 virus and the state of emergency declared by the Governor.

Refunds for registration fees will be issued – if you paid with a credit card online, you should see a credit soon. If you paid with a check or cash, please be patient as we will have to navigate UNM’s accounting requirements on issuing refunds.

We are making plans for HIGH SCHOOL participants to still be considered for the International Science & Engineering Fair. Unfortunately all events for elementary and middle school students are cancelled and will not be made up virtually or otherwise.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ONLY – if you would like to be considered for a spot to ISEF you must do the following:

1.       Submit a photo of your board. You will do this by logging back into the fair registration site and uploading the photo(s) under the file type “PROJECT BOARD” You can submit multiple photos to ensure that all parts of the board are readable, HOWEVER, you must submit them as ONE file. The system will override previous uploads if you try to submit more than one sequential file under the same file type. PHOTOS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY MONDAY, MARCH 16 at 12 NOON.

2.       Our category judge chairs will review all projects that submit photos. Photos of the board as well as abstracts and paperwork already submitted will be reviewed and scored.

3.       The top scored projects (10-15) will be selected for interviews either virtually or in person. The interviews will be scheduled on Friday, March 27 when judging for Research Challenge was to take place. Students will be notified no later than Wednesday, March 25 if they are selected for an interview. Plans for how/where the interviews will take place are still being developed and will be communicated to students once finalized.

We know this news is very disappointing as you all have worked very hard to advance to this level of competition but, of course, the health and safety of our participants, staff, volunteers, and the larger community is of upmost importance during this time. I know you will continue to work hard and hope to see all of you next year!

Please let Erin Garcia know if you have any questions or concerns.
