How has your participation in STEM-H Center programs influenced your college and/or career choices?

Hands-on STEM-related activities definitely made the thought of studying STEM in general a lot more appealing.

Please describe some of your favorite memories of participating:

"-Building contraptions to meet the requirements of the competitions.
-Having a legitimate reason to research STEM topics outside of what was taught in class."

How has your participation in STEM-H Center programs influenced your college and/or career choices?

Being involved in the behavioral sciences section of science fair allowed me to realize my passion for mental and behavioral health and human interaction. From this, I decided to major in psychology and eventually got involved in therapy!

Please describe some of your favorite memories of participating:

"I remember starting most of my presentations to judges with a joke. For example, for my project on the effect of interruptions on productivity and performance, I started with:
Knock knock
Who's there?
Interrupting cow
Inter-
Mooo

So, saying this joke in front of a panel of ten judges when they swarmed my board, was an interesting experience..."

How has your participation in STEM-H Center programs influenced your college and/or career choices?

I was interested in science from an early age, but participation in the Science Fair solidified my path.

Please describe some of your favorite memories of participating:

I enjoyed discussing projects with fellow students, plus presenting the information to volunteer judges. I appreciate the questions that were asked of me.

How has your participation in STEM-H Center programs influenced your college and/or career choices?

The participation in the Regional Science Fair as a Middle Schooler and High schooler set the stage for me to become more interested in science and engineering, especially as it put me into contact with UNM Engineering Directors like Tom Cummings, who helped a farm kid from central New Mexico seek summer internships that helped me go to college and later get my PhD from one of the top 3 institutions in the world for engineering and be a part of the space shuttle program.

Please describe some of your favorite memories of participating:

"One of my memories was having a group of judges come to my science fair project and ask questions about it where they later offered me a job to work at Sandia Labs years later.

For Science Olympiad I have fond memories with regard to the bottle rocket event where one time our rocket went so high it landed on a school bus that had already left the parking lot and was on the main road. Needless to say it got really good marks for design!"

BS Biology, BA Chemistry at UNM. Expected Completion May 2020

How has your participation in STEM-H Center programs influenced your college and/or career choices?

Being a former student employee solidified the fact that I want to pursue a career in STEM. Providing young students with the resources to cultivate a research project based off of a question they ask is incredible and I am glad to have been a part of it.
