Jarek is an undergraduate senior at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology studying Environmental Engineering. His multi-year award winning projects at the Research Challenge and ISEF focused on soil carbon storage and the impacts of climate change on desert soil fertility. As an undergraduate, he has studied nutrient cycling in ocean oxygen minimum zones, large regions of water devoid of oxygen where microbes emit powerful greenhouse gases like nitrous oxide. Jarek plans to pursue a PhD in geochemistry or geobiology to study how microbes and human activities shape the Earth's climate and the chemical composition of the biosphere.
