I am a second-year medical student in the UNM Combined MD/PhD Program. In high school, I participated in the Central NM Science & Engineering Research Challenge in the Medicine and Health Category where I developed the fundamental skills of applying the scientific method to formulate and answer questions about the human body. I attended UNM for my undergraduate degrees in the UNM Combined BA/MD Program. During this time, I joined a research lab in the Center for Biomedical Engineering investigating novel therapeutic and diagnostic agents for Alzheimer’s disease. These research experiences influenced my decision to become a physician scientist: a career that bridges clinical medicine at the bedside with basic science at the lab bench. In my time at the School of Medicine, I have also conducted educational research in academic medicine through curriculum development and evaluation regarding LGBTQIA+ health issues.
