Katie is a Research & Development (R&D) leader with diverse experience in scientific research, operations, and people & project management within academic, government, and industry settings. She currently leads an R&D discovery team at a plant-based biotechnology company, Calyxt. Katie holds a B.S. in Biology from the University of New Mexico and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences with an emphasis on plant genetics and development from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Katie’s inspiration to pursue a career in science was fueled by her participation in science fairs over several years – her work on characterizing DNA damage response pathways in yeast was recognized with top honors at the Central New Mexico STEM Research Challenge and the NM State Science Fair (2002 & 2003), and with a 4th place Grand Award at the 2003 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Outside of work, Katie has remained active in STEM outreach and also enjoys the art of quilting, reading novels and inspirational biographies, and spending time with her family.
