Lauren Atencio is a PhD student in the department of Biochemistry at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her research focuses on immune pathways and zoonotic viruses. Lauren’s introduction to research was as a participant in the 2012 Central New Mexico Science & Engineering Research Challenge. She graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology and Chemistry with honors distinction and a minor in Psychology. As an undergraduate, she held a position as a Research and Development intern at Sandia National Laboratories. She was involved in many research projects including algal crop cultivation for biofuel production, validation of novel drugs to treat Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections, development of a fluorescence assay to type unknown bacteria using bacteriophages, and validation of various disinfectants for SARS-CoV-2. In her last summer at SNL, she was a part of the diagnostic lab team processing SARS-CoV-2 patient samples.
